Brief History

Harris Irungu Stroke Survivors Foundation is a non-profit making organisation based in Aguthi Gaaki in Nyeri County, Kenya. The noble idea to start the Foundation was motivated by Harris Irungu who succumbed to stroke related complications. He was the brother to Caroline Wambugu who came up with the idea of supporting stroke survivors after witnessing the suffering her brother went through.

It was formed in the year 2018 and formally registered in January 2019 by the NGO Coordination Board registration number OP.218/051/18-101/11190. The Foundation undertakes its activities mainly in Nyeri County which include: offering care and support to survivors of stroke through provision of nutritious food, therapy, counselling and psychosocial support, provide linkage to students from poor households to access available bursaries and also support them start income generating activities (IGAs).

Vision

A sustainable, supportive and trusted foundation serving stroke survivors.

Mision

To provide hope, care and empower stroke survivors in a stigma free community in Nyeri and neighbouring counties.

Core Values

  • Respect
  • Stewardship
  • Solidarity
  • Charity
  • Love for Service

When we started the journey, we met Cucu Grace who was a 94-year-old stroke survivor. She was living in a shack and dire poverty. We managed to build a small house for her and employed a caregiver for her. I caterred for her monthly upkeep. I also support monthly medication and payment of NHIF to those who cannot afford to pay and also provide transportation to the hospital when needed.

We currently operate on two crucial aspects of our beneficiaries' lives:
Health:we offer care through home visits and provision of therapy services to stroke survivors, sourcing for medicine and diapers for those with stool or urine incontinence. We also offer mental health support to all survivors. In addition, we help the beneficiaries acquire the prescribed medicine, follow-ups and clinic attendance by fee payment and transportation to the health facilities.
Nutrition:We help in the provision of nutritious food which is essential for recovery.

.....In addition, we hope to provide assistance and linkage to available funding opportunities for school fees for children from poor backgrounds and where there are stroke survivors. We hope to be able to help the survivors and their dependents initiate Income-generating Activities such as chicken rearing for meat and eggs, dairy goats and dairy cows.

Future and Ongoing Projects

Purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle
In order to provide a safe and comfortable environment for the beneficiaries, especially in times of movement to and from medical facilities for clinics or visitations, we need to purchase a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
This will be a long-term commitment and we will be able to provide the vehicle to the beneficiaries when they are needed to move to a hospital or any relevant medical facilities.
Building a Respite Facility
We are currently working on setting up a respite facility for the survivors. This will be a facility used for the survivors who are not able to move to a hospital or any relevant medical facilities.
This facility will be used to provide care, such as therapy, and medicine to the survivors who are not able to move to a hospital or any relevant medical facilities.
